Rhodium plating

What is a Gilding ?

Rhodium plating is a jewelry treatment process in which a metal, usually gold or silver, is coated with a very thin layer of rhodium. This layer is usually formed using the electrolysis method, i.e. using an electric current to transfer rhodium to the surface of the metal. Rhodium is a very valuable metal that gives products not only aesthetic appeal, but also functionality.

Properties of rhodium and their significance in jewelry

Rhodium is a metal close to platinum, highly resistant to rust, corrosion, wear and oxidation. These properties make it extremely valuable, especially in jewelry. This is why rhodium plating is so popular and appreciated in this sector:

  1. Resistance to rust and oxidation : Rhodium is one of the most corrosion-resistant metals, so when a piece of jewelry is plated with this metal, it becomes less susceptible to environmental factors such as moisture, acids, and salts. This helps preserve the shine and aesthetic appearance of the jewelry for a long time.

  2. Gloss and Aesthetic Appearance : Rhodium has a very high level of light reflection, which gives metals a special shine and a cool, silvery hue. It is especially popular because it gives jewelry a luxurious look and makes the wearer feel elegant and distinguished. Rhodium, when plated over gold or silver, gives a light, cool hue that is reminiscent of platinum, making it a great choice for those who like this look but don't want to spend as much money on platinum jewelry.

  3. Scratch protection : Rhodium is quite strong and resistant to mechanical wear. Although it is not as strong as platinum, its layer still provides the metal with additional protection against scratches and wear. This is especially important for jewelry that is exposed to various factors on a daily basis (e.g. contact with clothing, cosmetics, etc.).

  4. Hypoallergenic : Rhodium is hypoallergenic, making it a great choice for people with sensitive skin or allergies. This is one of the main reasons why rhodium is so popular in jewelry that will be worn directly on the skin (such as rings, earrings, or bracelets). Rhodium does not cause allergic reactions or leave stains on the skin, as can sometimes happen with other metals.

How does the screening process work?

Rhodium plating is usually performed by electrolysis, where a special solution containing rhodium salts is used to coat metal surfaces. An electric current causes rhodium ions to deposit on the metal surface, forming a very thin (usually 0.5 microns to 1 micron thick) layer.

Stages of the display process:

  1. Preparation – Before rhodium plating begins, the jewelry must be thoroughly cleaned and polished to ensure the surface is smooth and free of any impurities. Even small particles of oil or dirt can interfere with the rhodium plating process.

  2. Rhodium solution preparation – The jeweler prepares an electrolytic solution containing rhodium salts. The jewelry is immersed in this solution.

  3. Electrolysis – An electrode system is immersed in a rhodium solution and an electric current is passed through it. The current causes rhodium ions to deposit on the metal surface and form a thin layer.

  4. Final treatment – After display, the piece of jewelry is removed and thoroughly cleaned. Sometimes it is polished again to achieve maximum shine.

Why is display used in jewelry?

Plating is used in jewelry not only for its aesthetic appearance, but also for its practical benefits. Here are some of the main reasons why jewelers choose this process:

  • Better appearance – Plating gives metals a “cold”, shiny appearance, which is popular in many jewelry making processes.
  • Protection from damage – A thin layer of rhodium protects the metal from scratches and corrosion, extending the life of the jewelry.
  • Price difference – While platinum and white gold are highly valued and expensive, display allows you to achieve a similar aesthetic effect at a lower price.

Popular display applications in jewelry:

Display is most often applied to jewelry such as:

  • Rings (especially wedding and engagement rings) that use gold or silver bases are plated with a layer of rhodium to give them a platinum hue and durability.
  • Earrings – Polishing is used to ensure that earrings remain shiny and resistant to wear.
  • Bracelets and necklaces – Jewelry that is often exposed to daily wear and tear can also be rhodium-plated for added protection and aesthetics.

Rhodium plating is an extremely popular and useful process in jewelry, providing an elegant appearance, protection, and durability. Rhodium plating not only enhances the aesthetics of metals, but also extends their lifespan, making it a choice for both jewelers and customers seeking the highest quality and durability.
